Attackers have successfully infected ransomware on systems of Diebold Nixdorf, one of the world’s largest ATM manufacturers. Diebold Nixdorf is responsible for an estimated 35 percent of all ATMs in use worldwide. In addition, the company produces ATMs that can be found in many stores.

Diebold Nixdorf told IT journalist Brian Krebs that it discovered suspicious activity on the corporate network on April 25. Since it suspected a ransomware attack, it was decided to disconnect all systems from the network and limit the spread of the malware.

According to Diebold, the attackers have never had access to ATMs or customers’ networks. However, the response to the attack would have had consequences for the service to more than a hundred customers, sources say to Krebs. Diebold states that the response had an impact on a system that automates repair requests, but this would not have affected customers.

The infection is now under control and its customers have been informed, the company says. Diebold claims that the ransom the attackers asked has not been paid. Details on how to infect the systems are not given.
